Shaping the future

European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. User operation has started in September 2017.

One of the areas of science at the European XFEL is serial femtosecond protein nano-crystallography and coherent diffractive imaging of biological particles such as organelles and protein complexes. The science at these scientific instruments depends on the quality of the biological samples to be measured. In order to enable preparation and characterization of biological samples for all instruments the integrated biology infrastructure in life sciences for the European XFEL was built up by the XBI User Consortium. The focus is on user support on almost 500 m2 of biological laboratory space located one floor above the scientific instruments. To operate the bio laboratories the European XFEL is looking for a
