The Institute of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a faculty position at the level of Associate Professor (tenured) in the field of Hydropower. In exceptional cases, applicants at the full professor level may be considered. | |
DescriptionWe seek applicants with research interests in hydraulic machines, specifically their design, operations, monitoring, and predictive maintenance, and, more broadly, the digita lization of the field of hydropower. The new faculty hire will address these challenges from an experimental, theoretical, or computational standpoint (or a combination thereof). Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: (i) Machine - healt h monitoring using advanced sensors and data - driven methods; (ii) Digital twins for predictive maintenance; (iii) Fatigue and wear of components due to cavitation and sediment - laden flows; (iv) Predictive modeling of fluid - structure interaction using Compu tational Fluid Dynamics simulations at high Reynolds numbers, including turbulent regimes; (v) Reduced - order modeling, and industrial design of hydropower plants.
Nearly 60% of the Swiss electricity generation comes from hydropower, and Switzerland is an important supplier of the European power grid. With hydropower being such a pivotal resource of the Swiss economy and society, applicants are expected to demonstrate a potential for direct interactions with industrial partners, operators, and other stakeho lders. As a faculty member of the School of Engineering, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent and creative research program and to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. | |
