The project manager-s main mission will consist in further developing the long-standing and internationally recognized activities of the bacterial strains genomic taxonomy project of Institut Pasteur. This will include the organization and follow-up of internal steering committee actions; the organization and follow-up of international strategic advisory board meeting and actions; fundraising by contributing to grant applications; developing our partnership programme with industry; contributing to a quality management system; and the organization of webinars and other dissemination activities, including publications.

Support from the Brisse group and the Education Department of Institut Pasteur will be provided.

Context and objectives

This role offer aims to consolidate and expand Institut Pasteur-s position in the study of the biodiversity of pathogenic strains and applications to epidemiological surveillance in public health. Developing and maintaining genomic taxonomies of bacterial strains is a long-term goal of Institut Pasteur. The development and maintenance of a universal genomic directory of bacterial subtypes, performed in collaboration with Oxford University, brings important scientific benefits and provides a virtually unique service to epidemiological surveillance networks for pathogenic bacteria. The open data sharing policy of the platform for strain nomenclatures facilitates collaboration on monitoring emerging sublineages and antibiotic-resistant strains.

Missions

  • Under supervision of the scientific project coordinator (Prof Sylvain Brisse), the main mission will be to steer all aspects of the genomic taxonomy project relevant to strategic decisions, implementation, business developments, community building and networking, training, and dissemination.
  • Under supervision of the educational project coordinator to manage the organization of online training webinars.
  • Liaising with collaborators in both projects, and with external parties including microbiologists, epidemiologists and public health actors in different sectors (clinical, food, veterinary) at the international level, with the aim of strengthening international collaborative links and securing future funding.

Profile

  • Young scientist (PhD and ideally post-doctoral experience) in genomic epidemiology of pathogens, or project management professional with skills in international community coordination and with demonstrated interest and knowledge of infectious agents- surveillance, and ideally bacterial genomics.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English (minimum C1 level)
  • Practical level of French language (minimum B2 level).
  • Experience in international scientific collaboration programmes.
  • Excellent communication skills; strong ability for production of written and oral reports.
  • Excellent teamwork capacity in a scientific environment.
  • Forthcoming and open minded. Comfortable to work into a multidisciplinary, international team.
  • Optionally, prepared to travel internationally on some occasions.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural environment, with a high level of transparency, work ethics and in close interaction with his/her colleagues.

Environment.

The job will be administratively hosted at the Education Department and functionally linked to the Brisse group at Institut Pasteur, Paris, France.
The project manager will work under the supervision of Prof Sylvain Brisse in close contact with scientific collaborators (e.g., microbiologists, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians) and with Dr Thierry Lang from the Education Department (for the teaching webinars component).

Salary and contract.

The monthly salary will correspond to the standards in France and will depend on the candidate- experience. This is a fixed term contract for 18 months, although we expect opportunities for extension of 18 more months. The position is available in September 2025 or slightly later, depending on the chosen candidate-s availability.

Application.

Please send your application as a single pdf file to Sylvain Brisse (sbrissepasteur.fr) with a detailed CV, a cover letter and references contacts.

Deadline. Please apply before July 15th, 2025; but the earlier, the better.
