Offer description

A position for an engineer at the interface between music and auditory perception is immediately available for a 12-month term at Centre for Research and Innovation in Human Audiology (CERIAH), led by Professor Paul Avan, within the Institut de l-Audition at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France.

As part of a structuring program at the intersection of scientific research, musical creation, and participatory science, Pasteur Institute, the Institute reConnect, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris are jointly developing a project exploring the links between auditory perception, cognition, acoustics, sound technologies, and contemporary musical creation.

The goal of this project is to make music accessible to both deaf and hearing individuals in real-time, simultaneously, and in a rich manner.

We are recruiting an excellent and motivated research engineer for this project.

Institut de l-Audition and CeRIAH

The Institut de l-Audition (Hearing Institute) is an interdisciplinary research institute with the objective of promoting integrative approaches to basic auditory neuroscience, developing innovative diagnostic tools and preventive and curative treatments for hearing disabilities. The Institut de l-Audition brings together world-class researchers from various fields, including neurophysiology, computational neuroscience, auditory cognition, genetics and genomics, cell biology and gene therapy. Most teams associate fundamental researchers and MDs and conduct research protocols applicable to humans with clinicians as co-investigators.

The Institut de l-Audition, located in the centre of Paris is hosting the Centre for Research and Innovation in Humans (CeRIAH), dedicated to the running of research protocols on human volunteers (excluding clinical trials for drugs). Providing a very complete set of cutting-edge equipment, dedicated staff composed of research audiologists, engineers and project manager and know-how in all the auditory science domains, the CeRIAH aims to increase the understanding of hearing problems, with a view to developing personalized medicine.

Mission

The auditory perception engineer will collaborate with research teams and partners (Orchestre de Chambre de Paris) under the supervision of Professor Paul Avan. The engineer will contribute to the project-s design and ensure operational coordination between research teams, artistic teams, and technical partners, guaranteeing scientific rigor and technical feasibility. Responsibilities include:

  1. Engineering and Development
    • Design and develop tools to test participants- perceptual or emotional reactions in real-time during live music workshops (preferably as a smartphone application).
    • Design protocols for data collection and analysis, considering the short time slots available for measurements, requiring close coordination with the artists involved.
  2. Research/Creation Interface
    • Translate scientific hypotheses into frameworks usable by artistic teams.
    • Translate artistic intentions into measurable and scientifically exploitable parameters.
    • Support musicians, composers, and project managers in adopting scientific and technical devices.
  3. Valorization and Mediation
    • Contribute to the scientific and cultural valorization of the project (conferences, meetings, commented concerts, workshops).
    • Participate in drafting scientific, technical, and pedagogical content accessible to musicians leading the workshops.
    • Occasionally engage in mediation activities for diverse audiences.
  4. Transversal Management
    • Contribute to tracking the project-s timeline, deliverables, and milestones within the scope.
    • Participate in exchanges with institutional, academic, cultural, and philanthropic partners.
    • Propose scientific, technical, and artistic evolutions for the program.

Profile Candidate

  • In-depth knowledge of music

Skills

  • Proven expertise in auditory perception.
  • Master-s degree of audio engineering and signal analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Max/MSP, or equivalents).
  • Ability to design and lead experimental protocols.
  • Understanding of musical creation environments and orchestra operations.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and simplify complex scientific content.

Experience

  • Significant experience in interdisciplinary projects combining scientific research and artistic creation.

The position will be granted for 12 months, with possible renewal according to performance and grant application outcomes. The project will be conducted in Paris, in the brand-new CERIAH, part of Institut de l-Audition which also may provide exciting career opportunities for young talented researchers. Interested candidates should submit a CV and cover letter mentioning a few referees who might provide a letter of recommendation.

Bi-monthly travel between the Pasteur Institute and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris (Philharmonie de Paris) will be required.
