Since the democratization of higher education, the number of students has greatly increased. This significant increase has led to a heterogeneous student body in terms of social background, age, gender, and so on. In spite of this, universities are facing widespread failure (OECD, 2009). In France, 29% of students obtained their bachelor’s degree within three years (MESRI, 2021).
Numerous researchers have looked into the factors that can improve student success at university. In this literature, the effects of socio-demographic and academic factors on student performance or perseverance have been studied in particular, notably in Anglo-Saxon countries. However, there is less research in France.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of these known factors on the student population of Aix-Marseille. Among other things, we are interested in the effect of age, gender, scholarship profile, housing type, professional activity and educational background on undergraduate averages. To study these effects, we are conducting a cohort follow-up of students from psychology, law and science programs over the three years of their undergraduate studies.
