How to prevent and reduce disability among children, teenagers and young adults in the Paris region?

Sorbonne Université has been awarded the QIM "Handicap et Autonomie" prize for its project "Comment prévenir et réduire les situations de handicap des enfants, adolescents et jeunes adultes franciliens" ("How to prevent and reduce disability among children, adolescents and young adults in the Paris region") by Professors Eléonore Bayen, Head of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, and Raphael Vialle, Head of the Orthopedic and Child Reparative Surgery Department at the Armand-Trousseau Hospital.

A ¤1.5 million grant from the Île-de-France region to improve support for disabled young people in the region.

The goal of the research work presented in this "Major questions of interest" is to shed light on our understanding of the contributing factors of young people’s disability situations.
 
The research program is structured around two areas.

The first focuses on identifying and assessing the factors that contribute to the harmonious development of children, adolescents and young adults, or to disability, and the modifiable prevention factors (primary, secondary and tertiary) involved in disability. This is based on research using innovative technologies and therapies (e.g. surgical) and on the modeling-exploitation of varied databases (longitudinal socio-epidemiological cohorts, experimental clinical cohorts, and medico-administrative data for example).

The second involves the construction and/or evaluation of innovative systems or actions in the fields of childhood and disability for children - teenagers - young adults, aimed at preventing or reducing disability situations, and proposing operational tools at local level. This area includes the transfer of scientific knowledge to society, using implementation science approaches.

 
In these two areas, links will be sought between disability situations and the following fields:
  • Care pathways (needs for improvement in the field of motor and cognitive disabilities)

  • Maternity-child and child-adult transition (coordination of multiple and "jump" care)

  • Inclusion from school to vocational training and the job market



The scientific proposal therefore includes a diversity of approaches and partners to provide information on current issues of importance to the Ile-de-France region in terms of disability prevention, diagnosis and support. The academic and research establishments selected, as well as their respective partners, are also varied, aiming for a good representation of the players in the Ile-de-France region.
 
The nine research projects selected in the scientific proposal and their promoters:

  • Caring for the spinal cord in utero: improving the prognosis of children with myelomeningocele.

    • Multimodal study of neonatal brachial plexus paralysis.
  • Disability and social-cognitive processes: study of the development of social cognition and its disorders in neurodevelopmental pathologies.

  • Taking genetic factors into account to understand the causes of learning disorders and identify levers to reduce them

  • A better understanding of the health and medico-social needs of young head injury victims in the Paris region, and recommendations.

  • Multimodal assessment of the risk of spinal cord injury during correction of complex spinal deformities: Contribution of intraoperative SWE elastography.
