Sorbonne University signed two important new partnership agreements last week with Indiana University (IU), a major public research institution in the U.S. and a world leader in professional, medical, and technological education.

The agreements, signed by Sorbonne University President Chambaz and IU President Michael A. McRobbie, will develop new areas of faculty research collaborations and enable student exchanges between both institutions.

"Sorbonne University’s ambition is to structure and develop its internationalization with two key objectives. First, to increase its student mobility abroad program and second, to accelerate its Alliances with a few global universities worldwide," said Jean Chambaz. "Sorbonne University is proud to sign a global agreement with Indiana University, a large, international and open university.

"This agreement has an ambitious student exchange program and is grounded in strong research. Several joint actions have been explored to serve as the foundation for a sustainable partnership between IU and Sorbonne University. Our goal is to educate future citizens who are open to the world and the society, as well as engage our researchers and facilities in finding solutions to the challenges of the future."
In addition to the Sorbonne University delegation to Indiana, French Consul General in Chicago Guillaume Lacroix and a number of his colleagues attended the formal signing of the agreements. IU President McRobbie led an IU delegation to France in 2017. Since then, subsequent visits have included meetings to determine areas of shared interest and discuss potential opportunities for research collaboration and student mobility.

"Our partnerships with leading universities around the world are one of the key foundations of IU’s global engagement, and we’re excited about the many opportunities for students and faculty that this new relationship will create," Vice President for International Affairs Hannah Buxbaum said.

Faculty at IU and Sorbonne University are already engaged in educational collaborations, including in the areas of French linguistics, marine biology, neuroscience and physics.

During their visit to IU, President Chambaz and Serge Fdida, Vice President for International Development, and other senior leaders and faculty researchers from Sorbonne University met with their IU counterparts to further explore scholarly and research collaborations in areas including the humanities, media communications, the physical, life and computer sciences.
